COVID-19 Death Reporting

  • Hospital Notification: When a hospitalized patient dies, the hospital may report it to the health department.
  • Lab Report Investigations: The health department investigates lab reports through direct outreach. A patient may die during the investigative follow-up process.
  • Death Record Search: The health department cross references cases and death records to identify patients who have died.
  • Medical Examiner: When a person dies outside of a hospital setting, the medical examiner may determine testing is needed. When the result is positive, it’s reported to the health department.

The Houston Health Department matches death certificates to positive lab reports before reporting deaths. Death certificates can be delayed several weeks.
