AlertHouston: Half-Mile Precautionary Shelter In Place Issued Due to Large Fire at Independent Texas Recyclers on Irvington Blvd

The Houston Fire Department is responding to a large fire at Independent Texas Recyclers, 6800 Irvington Blvd. A precautionary shelter in place has been issued for a half-mile radius surrounding the location. 
 
People in the area can expect to see heavy smoke and an increase in emergency vehicles. Ongoing air and water monitoring is being performed by HFD Hazmat, Houston Public Works, and the Houston Health Department.

Protective Actions

Residents in the immediate area are advised to seek shelter indoors, shut off air conditioning and heating systems, and close all windows and doors until the smoke clears.  People with heart or breathing conditions, such as asthma, may be more sensitive and should seek immediate medical attention if their condition is aggravated or they experience shortness of breath or chest pains.
 
People are asked to avoid the area until the fire is contained, to allow emergency vehicles easy access to and from the scene.  Additionally, drivers may experience reduced visibility from heavy smoke.  
 
Prolonged exposure to smoke can cause negative health effects.
